Yaa Gyasi’s has done it again with her 2nd Novel Transcendent Kingdom. It is truly a work of art that had me gripped from start to finish.

A book that can take you on an emotional rollercoaster, is in my view an incredible book.

After reading Homegoing, Yaa Gyasi’s first book. I eagerly awaited in anticipation for the second novel set to be released.

Her writing style is poetic, raw and enthralling and can really speak to the core of humanity regardless of your walk in life.

Context

Transcendent Kingdom Is told through the singular voice of the main character Gifty, whose life begins as what seems a content family of four, but dwindles thorough absence and traumatic loss to three, then two and finally one, herself.

This novel illustrates the strains of race, immigration, mental health, belonging, and addiction.

Final Thoughts

If you have read Homegoing which explores western Africa’s roots on a beautiful but unsettling journey from slavery to emancipation, Transcendent Kingdom gives.

In summary, this is a beautifully written book that covers a lot of different issues, including; mental health, immigration and the immigrant experience in the USA, racism, addiction, family and familial relationships

If you enjoy a read that takes you on an emotional journey bringing you to tears in one chapter, belly laughing in the next with some anxiety thrown in, then this is the book is for you.
