Flying Solo Series: My time in Rome

Flying Solo Series: My time in Rome

When in Rome…

Why did you go?

I went because I wanted to challenge myself and explore the incredible wonders of the world. Additionally, I was eager to experience and enjoy authentic Italian food in its true setting.

Before the flight Drama

So after missing my flight and having to catch the very last flight departing from Gatwick airport, I was honestly ready to just give up and go straight home.

Feeling pretty disappointed about the whole situation, I decided to treat myself by visiting the airport lounge and get the party started a little earlier than planned. I’m really glad I made that choice.

Just a quick side note: airport lounges are definitely worth it, especially with the Revolut banking app, as you can gain access to most airport lounges for just £20. Use my link below:

My Time

I arrived at my hostel just after 1am and quickly completed the check-in process. Please bear in mind that I had carefully booked this entire experience three months ago, and at the time of booking, I was certain that I wanted to stay in a mixed dorm with 10 people.

However, as the check-in guy was confirming my room details, I became adamant that he must have made a mistake. It was in that moment I began to realize that perhaps my entire plan up to that point had been a mistake.

Fortunately, the gentleman at reception was kind enough to listen and upgrade me to a female dorm with only four occupants (I truly felt that God was on my side).

After I had checked in and put my bags down in the room, I decided to take a leisurely stroll to the Trevi Fountain. I wanted to capture some pictures before the busy crowds arrived later in the day.

To be honest I really enjoyed visiting the sites and learning the history of Rome and how they once was the super power of the world. Vatican city was really cool and airy. I did visit in the peak of a heatwave so was extremely hot.

The food was just meh, maybe because I wasn’t that hungry due to the intense heatwave that was going on.

Would I go there again? Probably not. I found Rome to be quite an airy but also heavily controlled city. Within the main areas, police cars are everywhere, the tall, airy buildings from an ancient civilization stand out prominently, and there are these eerie birds whose sounds echo throughout the night.

Would I return to Italy? Yes. Would I return to Rome? No, not really. I think next time I’ll explore the coast instead, as I feel that will suit my vibe much better.

I’m really curious to hear about your experience-what did I miss? What was your experience like, and where do you recommend I visit next in Italy?
