Goodbye Fast Fashion and Hello Quality Handmade Garms

…So I have decided to invest in a sewing machine

Why?

I’ve been helping my uncle clear out my gran’s home. Gran had two sewing machines taking up space, but I had never actually seen her use them in action, especially not live in 4K quality. While going through her belongings, I discovered piles of fabrics, unfinished curtains, and various projects she had started but never completed.

It was a glimpse into her creative past. What made it even more meaningful was knowing that her father was a famous tailor in Jamaica, from Stoney Hill. This family connection deepened my desire to keep the skill alive and ensure that this beautiful talent remains strong within our bloodline.

So, how is it going?

I have carefully lined a bag for my niece and made an A-line skirt that, unfortunately, will probably never see the light of day. My appreciation for those who create clothes by hand has increased significantly, and I find myself valuing fabrics much more than before.

I've come to realize that sewing your own clothes isn’t necessarily cheap -the cost of quality fabric can be surprisingly high.

Admittedly, I don’t think my skills are very advanced yet, so here I am, sitting and looking at the sewing machine tucked away in the corner of the room, wondering if I will ever pick it up again. I know I will eventually, but right now, I’m just lacking the motivation. Still, I am determined to start sewing again soon.

If you have any recommendations for quality fabric shops I should check out, please feel free to comment. Hopefully, one day soon, I’ll feel confident enough to share one of my projects on a future blog post.
